FHBC U18 Women's High Performance Tournament
The FHBC U18 Women's High Performance Tournament took place this past
weekend (April 16-18) at Tamanawis Field in Surrey. Congratulations to
the Northwest Goats who defeated the Northwest Angels in the final.
The Island won the bronze medal, while the Southeast and Interior
placed 4th and 5th respectively. Congratulations to all athletes,

Women's Pan Am Cup - Team Canada take the Silver Medal
The U17 Pan Am Cup Women are in Montevideo, Uruguay and will be playing
in the tournament final of the 1st ever Women's Youth Pan American
Cup. Canada defeated Chile 4-1 in the semi final to book their place
in the championship match. In pool play, Canada defeated Paraguay
12-0, lost to Argentina 5-1, and defeated Mexico 12-1 which landed them
in second place in their pool. Canada 's opponent in the final will be
Argentina who defeated the USA in the second semi-final. Final

will try to post the announcement by noon on the day of training, but
all athletes and parents are encouraged to check the FHBC website prior
to departing for training just in case there is a last minute update.

Field Hockey BC President, Margaret Johnson, Retires
Field Hockey BC would like to take this opportunity to recognize the significant contribution Margaret (Madge) Johnson has made to Field Hockey BC, to the BC Women’s Field Hockey Federation and to Field Hockey Canada over the last 14 years.
Since moving to BC in 1996; Madge has served as an Executive Member and then President of the BC Women’s Field Hockey Federation; an Executive Member of Field Hockey Canada; and for the last 4 years, as President of Field Hockey BC. Madge stepped down in an official capacity at the Field Hockey BC AGM on November 21, 2009.
On behalf of all members and staff at Field Hockey BC; we wish Madge a restful retirement and thank her immensely for her commitment to fostering growth within our sport, country wide.

Congratulations to the Kelowna Owls who
lifted the 2009 AAA High School Title on penalty strokes over West
Vancouver in
the final. The Highlanders finished an impressive second and had won
the tournament for the past two years in a row. The Carson Graham
Eagles finished in third place defeating the Handsworth Royals in
another tightly contested game with a score of 2-1.

FHBC Regional Women's Program - Island Trials Announced
Trial dates for the Island U16 and Island U18 squads
have been announced. U16 Trials will be held on Friday, Nov. 20 and
Friday, Nov. 27, while U18 Trials will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 and
Saturday, Nov. 28 (all trials at the UVic turf). Players must register
online with FHBC in advance of the first trial, and attendance at both
trials is mandatory.

BC Challenge - Final - BC/USA Draw - BC victorious in Series
The 2009 BC Challenge Series kicked off with a 1-1 draw between the
visiting USA U18 Team and the BC U18 Team. Game 2 saw BC victorious
3-1, while the final and deciding game played out in a draw 0-0. Credit

Field Hockey for The Cure a great success!
Field Hockey for The Cure featured a game between the National Women’s
Field Hockey Team and an All Star team who played at Wright Field at
UBC on Sunday, September 13th at 4pm. The original goal was to raise
$20,000 in support of The BC Cancer Foundation, but the team and its
supporters far exceeded their goal, with a total of $30 000 being

BC Blue defeated Ontario Red 2-1 Sunday afternoon to capture the 2009
Senior Women’s National Championship of field hockey. It is the
province’s second consecutive gold medal after winning in 2008.

Team BC Blue captured the silver medal at the 2009 FHC Senior National Championships in a close 3-2 game against Ontario Friday
afternoon in Calgary, Alberta. The Ontarians scored two goals in the
final two minutes of the game to win their first gold medal since 2007.

Pan Am Youth Camp
This past weekend at UBC, FHBC held trials for the Men's and Women's Pan Am Youth Squads. This is the first step in the pathway to the 2013 Junior World Cup, with the squads training through the fall and winter in preparation for the first ever Pan American Youth Championships. The Men's Championship will be held in Hermosillo, Mexico in February of 2010, while the Women's Championship will be played in Montevideo, Uruguay in March of 2010. The winning team from each tournament will be eligible to attend the first ever Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore. The squads have been announced.

The U18 Boys Club Championships were held at Wright Field and Hamber Field on the week-end of May 29th -May 31st. Congratulations to the West Van Bulls who beat the Surrey Sharks 2-1 in the final to capture the championship title at the U16 Girl's Club Championships held in Coquitlam May 29-31st. The West Van Ravens had a narrow 4-3 victory over the West Van Grasshoppers, taking the bronze medal in sudden death overtime. Remembering Pat Chapman
Field Hockey BC and the Field Hockey Community mourn the passing of a dear friend. Pat died peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on May 13th, 2009 at the age of 85. Pat is survived by her loving husband John, one son, Ian (Judy) and her beloved grandchildren Ryan, Sara (Sam) and Craig (Erin), two great-grandchildren, Ella and Charlie, and her brother Tony, in England. Pat will be remembered as someone whose active interests ranged from field hockey to the art world and the Faculty Women's Club. A talented interior decorator and skilled seamstress she made time for great dinner parties; for friends and family. A celebration of Pat's life will be held at one of her favourite places, Cecil Green Park, UBC on May 26th from 2 - 4 PM. In lieu of flowers a Faculty Women's Club scholarship fund will be set up in Pat's name.

The BC U16 team defeated the Northwest Sailors 2-1 on Sunday, to claim the U18 Women's High Performance Championship at The University of Victoria. In the bronze medal game the Southeast Cobras held off the Northwest Spartans in another 2-1 scoreline. Earlier in the day, the Island Thunder defeated the Interior for fifth place, while the Island Riders were victorious over the Southeast Ninjas to take seventh place. Canadian Men Qualify for the 2010 World Cup
Canada clinched the Pan Am Cup Gold Medal in Santiago, Chile, defeating USA in overtime after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. North Vancouver’s Paul Wettlaufer scored the game winning goal four minutes into extra time to send the Canadian men’s team to its first World Cup since 1998. BC's own Rob Short of Victoria was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player while Vancouver’s David Carter was named Best Goalkeeper. Congratulations to the athletes and staff. BC Wins Gold and Silver and Women's Nationals
Congratulations to BC Blue who won the gold medal, and BC White who took home the silver at U19 Nationals in Winnipeg. After a well contested final match that was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time and golden goal overtime, BC Blue pulled out the victory, winning 2-1 in penalty strokes. Earlier in the day, the BC U16 team put up a tough fight versus Ontario, but were defeated 7-2 in the bronze medal match. It was a disappointing loss, but overall a very impressive result for a team competing 3 years above their age group. Congratulations to all athletes for a job well done! Children's Fitness Tax Credit
Starting with the 2007 tax year, the Government of Canada allows a non-refundable tax credit based on eligible fitness expenses paid by parents to register a child in a prescribed program of physical activity. The children's fitness tax credit allows parents to claim up to $500 per year for eligible fitness expenses paid for each child who is under 16 years of age at the beginning of the year in which the expenses are paid.
Tax receipts for participation in the FHBC's Developmental, Regional and Provincial Excellence Programs in 2007 have been issued by email to all eligible athletes. If you did not receive the tax receipt, please contact info@fieldhockeybc.com.

A Dear Friend Passes Away
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Judy Broom. For so long the heart and soul of field hockey in British Columbia, Judy will be sadly missed and our thoughts and best wishes are extended to Judy's husband Eric and the entire Family. Judy's career with the BC Women's Field Hockey Federation and more recently Field Hockey BC spanned twenty-seven years in which time Judy helped build the sport of field hockey in British Columbia and across the Country. A Celebration of life was held at St. Mark's Anglican Church on Friday 8th February, 2008. Judy touched the lives of many within our community. She will be remembered always.

This Mixed team festival allows for a great weekend of field hockey with time to spare for visiting the local golf courses, wineries, and lake. BC Schools AAA Championships
Congratulations to West Vancouver (North Shore) who took home first place at the AAA Championships held at Burnaby lake from November 14-16th! Canada-USA Men's Series
Our U16 BC Men and U20 Canada Men played very well against the USA at the 3rd annual BC Challenge and U20 Series this past weekend at UBC. Although the U16 Men finished strong with a win in their third game against the USA, the USA won the series based on goal differential. Senior National Championships (Winnipeg)
BC win Silver (Men) and Bronze (Women) medals at the 2007 Senior National Championships. Previously.. BC Men overwhelm the hosts Manitoba 8-0 in their first pool match. BC Women below par as they open their campaign with 1-0 loss to Alberta 1. BC Women bounce back with convincing 5-1 win against Alberta 2. BC Men continue to hit the back of the net with 4-1 win over Ontario and 4-0 win over Alberta in their second and third pool games respectively. BC Men and Women dominate Manitoba 10-0 and 7-1 respectively. BC Men and Women both lose to Ontario, 1-0 and 4-2. BC Men secure a place in the final with 2-0 win over Alberta. BC Women to compete for the Bronze while BC Men go for Gold in the medal finals.

Western Canada Games (Alberta)
Team BC win GOLD with repeat 2-0 victory against Alberta in the Games Final. Previously..Team BC began their campaign with a convincing win over Alberta 2-0 in their first pool game. Team BC goals scored by Pam Aldridge and Abigail Raye. The afternoon game against Saskatchewan proved to be a successful match! Pam Aldridge opened the score in the 4th minute of play on a penalty corner goal. Pam also finished an outstanding right side attack, slotting a field goal in the 7th minute. BC won the second match 11-0, and looked composed and strong as they moved the ball around their prairie counterparts. Team BC advance to the final with 4-1 win over Manitoba. read more..

2007 US Challenge (California)
BC close out the U.S. series with an extremely competitive and committed final performance. Both teams created opportunities, the best of which fell to the BC team, however, the U.S. goalkeeper managed to keep BC the wrong side of a 1-0 score line. Series score USA 2 BC 1. Previously... BC tie series 1-1 ahead of the weekends deciding match. The BC U19 Boys squad fought back extremely well to win the second match of this three match series 2-0. Canada Men win Pan-Am Gold and qualify for Beijing Olympics with sudden death win over Argentina match report Canadian Men win semi-final to advance to the Gold Medal Game against Argentina. BC Provincial Teams enter phase two of the 2007 Program
Following the success of the BC U14 and U16 Boys and Girls teams at the BC Invitational Championships in Vancouver earlier this month; the Provincial summer continues with U19 and U16 Girls teams and a U19 Boys team traveling to Toronto for the Junior National Championships, July 25-29. Whilst these teams are away, FHBC will host the U.S. National U19 and U16 Girls squads in Vancouver for the annual Can-Am Challenge against BC Provincial U19 and U16 select teams, July 24-28 @ UBC. Phase three of the Provincial summer sees a second BC U19 Boys team travel to California to take on the U.S., August 2-5; the BC U19 Girls select team travel to Strathcona County for the Western Canada Games, August 7-11; and BC Men's and Women's Senior teams travel to Winnipeg for the Senior National Championships, August 16-19. We wish all the teams the very best of luck!

BC Invitational Tournament 2007
Congratulations to all athletes and coaches who competed in the BC Invitational on July 5-8 in Vancouver. In the women's division, BC U16 White took home the gold, while the U14 Blue and U14 White teams finished 4th and 5th respectively. In the men's U16 division, BC White captured the silver medal after losing to Ontario in the final, while BC Blue defeated Alberta 3-1 to win the bronze. U16 Women's Club Championship
Congratulations to the West Van Leprechauns who captured the gold medal in tier 1 of the U16 Women's Club Championship, held in Victoria this past weekend. The Leprechauns defeated Burnaby 3-0 in the final, after falling 2-1 to Burnaby in pool play. Coach Don Bird was very happy with his team's play this weekend, and also commended tournament organizers on a very well run event. It's Official - Victoria awarded the 2008 Olympic Qualifying Tournament
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has awarded Victoria, BC a Women’s Qualifying Tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The tournament will be held at the University of Victoria April 26–May 4, 2008. The announcement was made this week by Field Hockey Canada; following successful talks between the International Hockey Federation (FIH), Field Hockey Canada, Field Hockey BC and the Canadian Organising Committee; the contract awarding one of the six world Olympic Hockey Qualifying Tournaments was signed by the FIH and Canadian representatives. FHBC wins at 41st Annual Sport BC Awards
March 16, 2007 - The 41st Annual Sport BC Awards held on March 14, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver were a great success for field hockey. FHBC's Sumesh Putra was named Official of the Year, for his outstanding umpiring both domestically and internationally. FHBC Vice-President Ian Baggott received the President's Award for field hockey, in recognition of his great contribution to the sport in our province. Congratulations to Sumesh and Ian on what was an extremely enjoyable evening for the sports community in BC.
