Welcome to Field Hockey BC's guide to post-secondary education for field hockey players
Two players and a pair of coaches of the McGill Martlets field hockey team have earned all-conference honours among the 2008 Ontario University Athletics field hockey all-stars and major award winners announced by the OUA.
Jean-Pierre Turpain and Laurent Fayen, who share co-coaching duties at McGill, have been named co-recipients of the league's coach-of-the-year award, becoming the first mentors from McGill to earn this honour from the OUA. Martlets' goaltender Shauna Kearns of Toronto, Ont., earned second-team all-star status along with teammate and midfielder Camille St. Cyr, a science freshman from Richmond, B.C.

McGill University is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the country's leading research-intensive universities. With students coming to McGill from about 160 countries, their student body is the most internationally diverse of any medical-doctoral university in Canada.
The oldest university in Montreal, McGill was founded in 1821 from a generous bequest by James McGill, a prominent Scottish merchant. Since that time, McGill has grown from a small college to a bustling university with two campuses, 11 faculties, some 300 programs of study, and more than 34,000 students. The University partners with four affiliated teaching hospitals to graduate over 1,000 health care professionals each year.
Today McGill University is recognized as one of Canada's top research-intensive universities. In 2003, Heather Munroe-Blum became McGill's 16th Principal. Under her leadership, McGill has solidified its reputation as one of the top universities in the world, excelling in the quality of its research, education and service to the community.

Field hockey squad on a mission to succeed
Apr. 15, 2009
The 2008 season of field hockey at McGill featured an enthusiastic, hard-working squad that had a great experience together and displayed significantly more success than in recent years.
Although the team has been burdened by the lack of a feeder program from the Quebec CEGEP school system, the McGill coaching staff works hard each year to overcome that by encouraging recruits from outside the province, particularly from field hockey hotbeds in Ontario, British Columbia, the United States, and Europe.
Last season was a banner year for such "imports," who quickly meshed with and were mentored by the strong core of returning players.
The 2008 campaign also featured an expanded coaching staff. The depth of experience that they brought to the program allowed them to focus on skills in small groups. This resulted in the most competitive season in a long time for the squad.
The prospects for continued improvement are even brighter for the 2009 fall season, as a better structure, combined with a renewed recruitment program, should contribute to propelling the team to the next competitive level.
Potential recruits interested in playing for the McGill women's field hockey team should contact assistant coach Iain Martyn (Iain.Martyn@mail.mcgill.ca).
