Queen's University

Welcome to Field Hockey BC's guide to post-secondary education for field hockey players

The Queens Gaels Women's Field Hockey Team finished the 2008 season with a 2-9-3 record which put them in sixth place. This is the first time Queen's has missed the post-season since 1997. Although the Gaels ended the season missing the playoffs for the first time in over 10 seasons they hold their heads high and look forward to next season.

Queen’s Athletics and Recreation  hired Angela Meggs as the new coach of the Queen’s women’s field hockey team. Meggs, is a Kingston native and has a deep knowledge of the game, having first learned the sport at La Salle Secondary School where she was a mainstay during her time. Following her high school career she represented the University of Western Ontario playing on the varsity squad and was a co-captain.

 Queen's University - Athletics Minimize
The Queen's Gaels are the athletic teams that represent Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Team colours are blue, red and gold. Its main home is Richardson Memorial Stadium.

The Queen's Gaels teams have had a variety of successes on the national and international stages over the university's history. The Gaels football program is one of the oldest and most successful in Canada, boasting a total of three straight Grey Cup victories in the early Twentieth Century and three Vanier Cup victories as the top team in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

The success of teams in less well-known sports demonstrated the university's commitment to its stated goal of "sport for all," also reflected in how it continues to field more men's and women's teams at the Varsity level than any other university in Canada.

Queen’s University was a pioneer as being one of the earliest degree-granting institutions of higher learning in central Canada and was first in offering academic programs in art conservation, business and commerce, engineering physics, industrial relations and policy studies.

Members of the University's renowned faculty balance excellence in their fields with a dedication to students, through both classroom instruction and independent study advising. This is the hallmark of teaching at Queen’s and a defining characteristic of a Queen’s education.

Reid named OUA second team all-star by Michelle Robe Minimize
Reid named OUA second team all-star
Hamilton (October 23, 2008) – Mary Anne Reid of Gananoque, Ont. was named as a second team all-star on Thursday as the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced its women’ field hockey all-star recipients. Reid was the only Gael named to the all-star team.

Reid scored only one goal for the Gaels this season, but was considered Queen’s offensive leader contributing on several of the Gaels scoring plays this season. She continually led the Gaels push towards the opposing teams net and often initiated what turned into Queen’s scoring chances. Reid also was the Gaels top defender.

Despite Reid’s solid play, the Gaels narrowly missed the playoffs finishing in sixth place with a record of 2-9-3. On a positive note, the Gaels were able to play their first home game since 2003 in mid-October on the newly opened Tindall Field.
