 Team BC Selection Criteria Minimize

Field Hockey BC is looking for athletes to participate in our Provincial Excellence Program and represent BC at national and international level competition.  BC Coaches look for the following general criteria to inform the selection decisions to BC Teams:

• Superb Basic Skill Performance The ability to execute skills with speed and efficiency under pressure. The ability to apply, adapt and improvise skills during competition. See age specific criteria here.
• Consistent Skill Execution during training and competition phases.

• Specific set-play skills (Penalty corner skills).

• High level Awareness, Anticipation and Quick Decision Making in training and competition environments.

• Excellent Tactical Awareness and Team Play. Especially the ability to apply game plans as directed by BC Coaches.

• Exceptional Athleticism and Fitness (minimum 9.0 for U16s and U18 Field players, and 7.0 for U16 GKs; 7.5 GK U18s) with an ideal score between 10 and upwards on the on the Canadian version of the beep test), flexibility, coordination and agility with and without the ball, power, strength, and speed.

• Strong Character which ideally includes traits and abilities such as intelligence, positive attitude, leadership, resilience to setbacks/criticism, versatility, assertiveness, competitive edge, accountability, communication skills and coachability.

• Strong Work Ethic which ideally includes traits and abilities such as tenacity, self discipline, quick learner, willingness to excel, commitment and dedication (ie. attending all provincial team practices, meetings and sport science, and meeting fitness program expectation).

Children's Fitness Tax Credit
Starting with the 2007 tax year, the Government of Canada allows a non-refundable tax credit based on eligible fitness expenses paid by parents to register a child in a prescribed program of physical activity. The children's fitness tax credit allows parents to claim up to $500 per year for eligible fitness expenses paid for each child who is under 16 years of age at the beginning of the year in which the expenses are paid.

Tax receipts for participation in FHBC's Development, Regional and Provincial Excellence Programs are automatically generated as part of the online payment process. If you have not received your tax receipt, please contact info@fieldhockeybc.com.  

External Sport Credits
Athletes who participate in the Regional/Zone or Provincial programs are eligible to receive External Sport Credits towards their high school graduation.  FHBC sends letters to all athletes who are eligible to receive credit at the end of each program.
