 BC Men and Women both claim Gold at Under 16 National Championships Minimize

It was another strong showing for team BC at the Under 16 National Championships which were held July 30th-August 3rd in Mississauga Ontario.

On the women's side, the by U16 Blue captured gold by defeating the Ontario Red team 5-0 in the gold medal game. In the bronze medal game, it was two BC teams battling it out, but in the end BC White defeated BC U14 Blue to take home the bronze medal.

On the men's side it was much the same story where BC Blue defeated Ontario 3-0 to capture the gold medal while BC White defeated Alberta 3-0 earlier in the day to take the bronze.

Field Hockey BC has now won the right to send a team to the men's and women's Pan American Youth Championships in 2010. The Men's Youth Pan American Cup will be held in Mexico City, Feb. 6-14, 2010 , and the Women's Youth Pan American Cup is in Uruguay, March 6-13, 2010. The Pan Am Youth Championships are the continental qualifiers for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore in summer 2010.

BC Blue wins women’s national championship

BC Blue defeated Ontario Red 2-1 Sunday afternoon to capture the 2009 Senior Women’s National Championship of field hockey.  It is the province’s second consecutive gold medal after winning in 2008.

Katie Rushton scored the game winner for the winning side.  Other goal scorers include Stephanie Nesbitt of BC and Krissy Wishart of Ontario.

Earlier in the day BC White defeated BC U18 Blue 0-0 (4-2) on penalty strokes to claim the bronze medal.  Goaltenders Sydney Kolysher and Bea Francisco of U18 Blue played excellent, as did BC White substitute goaltender Kaelan Watson.

Alberta South defeated BC U18 White 1-1 (3-1) on penalty strokes for fifth-place while Ontario White beat Alberta North 3-2 in overtime to claim seventh.

On Saturday afternoon Prince Edward Island defeated Manitoba 1-1 (3-2) on penalty strokes for ninth place.

The 2009 FHC National Championships took place July 21 – 26 from Hawkings Field in Calgary.  Field Hockey Alberta were the hosts.

Ontario wins Senior Men's Championship

Team Ontario captured the men’s national championship of field hockey in stunning fashion with a 3-2 comeback victory over BC Blue Friday afternoon in Calgary, Alberta.  The Ontarians scored two goals in the final two minutes of the game to win their first gold medal since 2007.

With BC leading 2-1 entering the 68th minute Ontario was awarded a penalty stroke that was converted by Adam Ali.  Sean Barretto then scored the game winner past BC goaltender Antoni Kindler with only a few seconds remaining in regulation.

BC Blue opened the game’s scoring in the 26th minute with a penalty corner goal from Ben Martin.  Mark Pearson scored three minutes later to give the British Columbians a 2-0 lead entering the second half.

Keegan Pereira scored Ontario’s other goal on a field play in the 39th minute.

The game was the only match of this year’s men’s tournament where no cards were given.
